Making your own rug hooking frame

Posted By Molly on December 14th, 2009

I am a pretty thrifty person in many ways. I like to save my money to buy wool and backing so I figured out how to make a decent rug frame that didn’t cost too much. I found that you can purchase gripper strips from many online sources. I only wanted a small frame, so I decided to go with a purchased wood picture frame. It needs to be wood, so you can staple the gripper strips down. I chose an 11″ by 14″ frame, and ordered gripper strips to fit. Before they arrived I also purchased a wood board that I had cut to size at Lowes and a dowel. I cut the dowels with the front 2 shorter than the back to at a slant that I liked, and screwed them into place with wood screws. Then I painted my frame a really cool color, with lots of sparkles. When the gripper strips arrived I used a staple gun to tack them in place. I think the entire frame cost about 35.00 or so, and it works really well for me. Of course you could always make it smaller or larger to suit. I do have pictures, so just give a shout if you would like to see it.
Thanks!
Molly
